Another way to look at it is that in Northern Ireland in the early 90s we had the worst tit-for-tat killings in the history of the Troubles. We also had the lowering of the horrible metric of the youngest to be shot. There was an unwritten rule to not kill kids under 18 but that started to slip. Many thought a full civil war was going to happen which would be one sided as most Catholics did not own guns.
But then in the space of a year or two talks started to bear fruit. Some years after we had the Belfast Agreement.
I think we have reached the messy part now which will get messier as we head into winter and have the first punishment budget. But we also have parliament back soon which hopefully will help.
We can only lift ourselves out of it but things do progress.
